Movie review: The Raid (Redemption)

By mizaki | | Movies, Reviews

The Raid (Redemption) is an action-cum-martial arts Indonesian film written and directed by Gareth Evans. Staring Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Donny Alamsyah and Yayan Ruhian. The first and the last also being the fight choreographers. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing some of these names in Hollywood films. In fact, if you check IMDB, you already will. This may be old news to some of you but with a limited release it’s bound to enjoy a good life on disc. If you are less than enamoured with the genre, The Raid makes no attempt to transcend the genre. The …

Movie review: Total Recall 2012

By mizaki | | Reviews

A “re-imagined” version of the Philip K Dick story: “We can remember it for you wholesale”. Well that’s what they say when they don’t want you to compare it to a previous film based on the same story. In this case the 1990 film called Total Recall directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Trooper) and staring Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator, Predator), same name, good start there chaps. When I first heard of this remake, sorry “re-imagining”, I did shout a metaphorical “WHY!?” Then I saw the trailer and was willing to put the first film to the back of my …

Liars – WIXIW Review or: How To Create Music From Balloons To Unsettle Your Children

By pete_the_lion | | Music, Reviews

I’m going to start this review with a disclaimer: Results May Vary. This album will not be for everybody, a fact probably made obvious when you take into account the fact the band used balloons, dripping water, foil and small metal figures as instruments. This isn’t as pretentious as it sounds, or as encapsulating a set of restrictions as Hecate and Venetian Snare’s Nymphomatriarch – an album created solely from sounds generated by the two of them bumping uglies and as the booklet charmingly puts “inserting microphones.” Heading backwards through the news on their website (www.liarsliarsliars.com) to March and earlier …

What are you watching?

By Reginald | | Reviews, TV

Sorry for the late posting, I was in Indianapolis this weekend for a wedding, here is what I watched this past week! Better off Ted – S02E13 This episode was unaired in the US, I LOVED this show, if you have not seen it and like amazing half hour comedies that have a lot of wit and snark. You will no doubt love this show. I was able to procure this episode and was finally able to watch it. It was great and I am not to sure why it was not aired in the US. It had a lot …

Sigur Rós – Valtari Review or: How Shia LeBeouf’s Junk Might Not Be Enough

By pete_the_lion | | Music, Reviews

How do you market an album of slow, atmospheric tracks to a world hopped up on the internet with an ADD infected finger-trigger? You produce a video with Shia LeBeouf’s wang. This might be an illustrious introduction to Sigur Rós for some people, but chances are you’ve already heard them without knowing it. Vanilla Sky utilised Svefn-g-englar  to help wring emotion from a rock Tom Cruise. Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic somehow managed to add more whimsy by getting underwater puppets to dance to Staralfur. The BBC (and presumably every other channel offering nature documentaries) used Hoppipolla whenever they could, pairing it …
